Whenua ki te Whenua
When my niece passed away Nov 2021, her passing helped me realise the meaning of this work. That we are born to live on this whenua, and our time here is a brief journey that meanders through life from mountain to sea and every part of the whenua in between…
…to be reborn as a seed again.
Nature expresses the cycle of life so beautifully and the reality of watching a plant growing through its cycles is a reality check for me. A reminder that our lives are finite and precious and we need to treasure each moment.
Materials: Harakeke, taupata, raurekau, koromiko on harakeke paper. Untreated pine frame stained with native. (a deliberate act of reclamation of whenua and honouring rākau Māori)
